Thrombosis and inflammation in cardiovascular disease.
Platelets are critical not only in thrombosis but also in the development and progression of coronary disease. We are currently investigating platelet-derived inflammatory mediators and their effect in coronary disease.
Extracellular vesicles in thrombosis and inflammation.
Blood-cell derived extracellular vesicles (EV) are suspected to contribute to both the coagulability (the potential of the blood to clot) and inflammation in various diseases. Our group is defining mechanisms of platelet microvesicle release and their functional effects.
Novel non-invasive intervention techniques to reduce future cardiovascular events.
Remote ischemic preconditioning (RIPC), the simple application of a blood pressure cuff to a patient’s arm, is a technique that has shown some promise in reducing future cardiovascular events. Our interest is in understanding how and why RIPC works.
Age effects on platelet responsiveness.
With a rapidly ageing population, it has become increasingly important to understand the effect of age on platelets. Clinical trials are predominantly performed on a middle-aged population but the medications are being given to older populations as well.
